Homework: Pre-Romantic Literature

Welcome back dear students.  You have read Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Old Nurse's Story" and studied the characteristics Pre-Romantic Literature. The story we have read was written in 1852, more than fifty years after Horace Walpole and José Cadalso wrote their books. For your essay today I want you to think about the similarities and differences between a typical Pre-Romantic story, and Ms. Gaskell's story. Lugubrious Nights was almost comical because of its extreme sentimentalism. Did Ms. Gaskell's story make you laugh? What made it an effective or ineffective scary story?

Steps:

1. Print out the story (bring it to class tomorrow).

2. Underline the elements that come directly from Pre-Romantic influence.

3. Underline any elements that may oppose Pre-Romanticism.

4. How did this story make you feel? Would you say it is successful as a scary story? Why or why not? Find specific examples.
5. Use steps 2, 3, and 4 as a guide to your essay. Remember to separate different ideas into different paragraphs, but to keep the whole essay coherent. 

6. Use Arial, Times, or Courier New size 12.

7. One page minimum.

8. This is not a SUMMARY, so don't tell me the story, try to answer the questions to the best of your ability.

9. Copying or plagiarism will  result in a zero. Hand-written papers and late papers will not be accepted. The essay is due next class.
10. When you are finished check for spelling and grammar errors and read you paper out loud to make sure your ideas are clear and coherent! :)

Write a one page essay about the Neoclassical and Pre-Romantic elements in Northanger Abbey.
 -Last day to turn it in: Monday, April 11.
