Hello dear students! I am very glad to be starting a new period with you. This is a chance for you to get excellent grade.
Last class we talked about Courtly Love in Medieval Literature. As I mentioned in class, “The Miller’s Tale” is a subversion of the Courtly Love principles. What this means is that while most knight’s tales are supposed to teach young men how to behave, this story sabotages the whole process and shows the opposite behavior.
Homework steps:
1. Print out “The Miller’s Tale”. (You must bring it to class).
2. Read the story with a pencil or marker at hand. Whenever you find an action in the story that is the opposite of the Courtly Love principles, mark it.
3. In a notebook or piece of paper make a small outline of what you want to say in your essay so that your ideas are clear.
4. Write a one page essay in which you explain how Geoffrey Chaucer subverts (sabotages, makes fun of) Courtly Love in his story.
5. Remember that the essay must contain your name, class name and number, teacher’s name and date on the left corner of your paper.
6. You should use Arial, Times New Roman or Courier New size twelve.
7. The paper should be single spaced.
8. Use your own words. Anything copied from internet or another student will be marked a zero.
9. Good luck!
